Short-term fellowships for humanities scholars from Latin America

Some seven post-doctoral researchers from Latin America, preferably active in the fields of law, economics and social sciences, will be given the opportunity to conduct research in Germany in 2009 on the strength of a Thyssen-Humboldt Short-term Fellowship. The next deadline is 30 April 2009.

Research work in Germany is scheduled to last a total of six months. This should be divided up into two visits taking place outside term-time between December 2008 and March 2009 and December 2009 and March 2010 respectively.

Preference will be given to research proposals in the following four areas:

  • Good governance and stable institutions
  • Political liability and democratisation
  • Development processes in Latin America and Europe: Progress and regress
  • Interculturality and integration

To promote academic and regional networking all the fellows meet once a year in January at an interdisciplinary conference.

In 2008, eight applicants were granted fellowships: Four men and four women from Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Argentina are currently enhancing research institutions in Berlin, Potsdam, Konstanz, Cologne and Augsburg.

The fellowships are jointly financed by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Fritz Thyssen Foundation.
