Partners and Sponsors

The Humboldt Foundation’s activities are chiefly financed from resources deriving from government and non-government funders. They include, amongst others, the Federal Foreign Office, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the Federal Ministry for the Environment and Consumer Protection, and the European Union.

In addition, the Foundation cooperates with various partners, such as science institutions, foundations and private companies, and also receives financial support from donations and contributions to the endowment. This extra funding allows the Foundation to grant additional research fellowships and research awards and to open up new opportunities for their sponsorship recipients to collaborate with partners in Germany. Visit here for further information on how the Foundation is financed.

In the programmes involving private collaborative partners, selection and sponsorship are based on the Humboldt Foundation’s established criteria, procedures and regulations. Individuals sponsored conduct a research project they have chosen themselves together with an academic host in Germany. As Humboldtians they become members of the Humboldt Network, benefiting from the Humboldt Foundation’s prestige as well as its alumni sponsorship measures.

In many cases, the fellowships provided by private collaborative partners include additional opportunities such as visits to these partners, invitations to events and the chance to make contacts within the respective partner’s own networks.
